Tranquil Vigilance

The soul which God truly leads by the hand
ought to watch its path
with a tranquil vigilance
confined to the present moment.
Its attention should be
continually directed to the will of God,
in order to fulfill it every instant...
Thus the Psalmist exclaims,
Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord;
for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. (Ps. 25:15)
We watch our path by looking up, never down.
There are traps and snares all along the way
and we can never keep our feet free
by staring at the obstacles.
Over and over in the Psalms, we read:
My eyes are on You Lord!
If our eyes are on Him,
we are safe in the present moment.
Not necessarily free from trials,
but free from snares.
Lord, You are conforming us,
continually wanting to lift our gaze
off of ourselves and onto You.
We sacrifice our self-interest,
desiring only to know You and love You more.
Whoever wants to save his life will lose it.
I give that which is of no value
to gain the entirety of a life hidden in Your love.
I want Your presence and Your light
to be my guides every moment of every day.
I want to watch my path by watching You.
With a "tranquil vigilance
confined to the present moment."
