That My Steps Might Be Steady

Oh, that my steps might be steady,
keeping to the course You set;
Then I'd never have any regrets
in comparing my life with your counsel...
Give me insight so I can do
what you tell me—
my whole life one long,
obedient response.
Psalm 119:33-34

Oh, that my steps might be steady...
The key is allowing Your Holy Spirit to lead.
All day long I take steps;
some of them take me off course.
But all day long, You speak to me.
Your love and mercy follow me
and get me back on track.
Course adjustments are required
constantly to stay the course.
Doing what You tell me--
a lifelong response to Your voice--
is my assurance that I will live
the life You have for me.
Jesus, everything You are
is everything I want to be.
By Your grace, I will become
more like You every day.
That truly is the greatest miracle--
that You desire to transform us
and help us become more like You.
I place my heart in Your hands
and surrender everything I am.
I know that I will have to do this
over and over again.
The narrow road of walking by Your voice
is where I want to be found all day long.
You have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in Your presence.
O God, in Your life-giving light.
Psalm 56:13

Soaring Above

The eagle that soars at great altitudes
never worries about how it will cross a river.
When I am stumped by the obstacles in life.
When I can't figure out how I get through them.
When I am at a loss for strategy and solution.
God says to me,
Why worry about going through them
when you can let Me take you over them?
My mindsets can be so limiting,
so natural, so earthbound.
Set your minds on what is above--
not on the things that are on the earth.
Colossians 3:2
When He told me to write "Up is Better,"
I knew He was going to teach me
about living from His vantage point.
I forget that sometimes.
Challenges are all around
and my mind is flooded with things
that are bound to this dimension.
Lord, You are my strength
and my shield and my victorious life.
I am seated with You and am not bound
by the limitations of this earth.
You don't come down to
build a bridge over the river.
You remind me to come up with You
so I can soar over it.
I am eternally present with You today.
The abiding presence of Your love
is my most valuable treasure and
the most powerful weapon that I have.

May I be rooted deep in love
and founded securely on love.
May I have the power to apprehend
and grasp the experience of that love,
that I know practically
the love of Christ,
the richest measure of the divine Presence,
that I am wholly filled and flooded
with God Himself!
Eph 3:17-19

Even Though

Even though...
Even though...
Even though…
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will exult in my victorious God!
The Lord God is my strength,
my personal bravery, and my invincible army.
He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and
will make me to walk--not to stand still in terror,
but to walk and make spiritual progress
upon my high places
of trouble, suffering, or responsibility!
Habakkuk 3:17-19
Habakkuk is talking about fig trees,
olive crops and flocks of cattle.
Nothing is working out for him.
He was facing troubles, suffering
or responsibilities that challenged him--
but he declared his trust in the Lord.
This morning, I say that
"even though" there are struggles,
I rejoice in You, Lord.
You are my personal bravery
and my invincible army.
You will help me walk on my high places--
not stand still in worry or anxiety--
but walk victoriously through this day.
I will make "spiritual progress"--
becoming more like You as I fix
my gaze and listen for Your voice.
Even though...
I will rejoice in You.

On the Ocean Floor

I've told you all this so that trusting Me,
you will be unshakable and assured,
deeply at peace.
In this godless world
you will continue to experience difficulties.
But take heart! I've conquered the world.
John 16:31-32

Jesus wants us to be unshakable and assured--
the peace that comes from the depths of our soul.
As a child, I spent much time at the shore,
and I loved riding the waves.
But I didn't like the ones that broke
before I could get over them.
I definitely had my share
of being thrown around by those breakers.
I quickly learned, however,
that I could drop down to the ocean floor
and miss the turmoil of the crashing.
I can still sense the peace I got
from laying on the ocean floor
knowing there was a whole lot
of commotion going on above me.
I need to remember that today
when those waves come along
that I can't simply just ride out.
I need to drop down to the ocean floor--
the depths of my soul
where I am deeply at peace,
unshakable and assured.
I can stay on top and get bashed around,
or I can drop down and be at peace.
I am leaving you with a gift—
peace of mind and heart.
So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14
I receive His gifts today:
peace of mind and heart.
So, I will not be troubled
nor will I be afraid.
I want to live in the
secret places of peace
on the ocean floor.

Abundant Water

For waters will break out in the wilderness,
and rivers in the desert.
The burning sand will become a pool.
The thirsty ground will become wells of water.
Isaiah 35:6-7
There is a promise for those wilderness places,
those places of burning sand and thirsty ground:
They will be filled with abundant water.

Jesus said to her,
“Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again.
Whoever drinks the water that I will give him
will never be thirsty.
The water that I will give him
will become in him
a well of life that lasts forever.”
John 4:14
Jesus is a spring of living water
for all those who believe in Him.
He is a well of life that is eternally present.
He has given us His life,
and it is always available.
Daughter, this day, simply believe.
Though you may see wilderness,
I see rivers of living water.
Do not agree with drought;
agree with the sound of the rivers.
Tap into My well of life.
Say to Me, "I can never be thirsty
for You have given me Your waters of life."
I have given you Myself--
divine grace, infinite love, rich mercy
and fathomless peace.
Simply worship Me here, right where you are,
and I will make you conscious of My presence.
You are My beloved and I desire to bless you.
I have made My home in your heart
and My Father is with Me.
You are never alone.
Risk everything on Our promises.
Your faith will be greatly rewarded.

Tranquil Vigilance

The soul which God truly leads by the hand
ought to watch its path
with a tranquil vigilance
confined to the present moment.
Its attention should be
continually directed to the will of God,
in order to fulfill it every instant...
Thus the Psalmist exclaims,
Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord;
for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. (Ps. 25:15)
We watch our path by looking up, never down.
There are traps and snares all along the way
and we can never keep our feet free
by staring at the obstacles.
Over and over in the Psalms, we read:
My eyes are on You Lord!
If our eyes are on Him,
we are safe in the present moment.
Not necessarily free from trials,
but free from snares.
Lord, You are conforming us,
continually wanting to lift our gaze
off of ourselves and onto You.
We sacrifice our self-interest,
desiring only to know You and love You more.
Whoever wants to save his life will lose it.
I give that which is of no value
to gain the entirety of a life hidden in Your love.
I want Your presence and Your light
to be my guides every moment of every day.
I want to watch my path by watching You.
With a "tranquil vigilance
confined to the present moment."

The Sacred Present

The next hour, the next moment,
is as much beyond our grasp
and as much in God's care,
as that of a hundred years away.
Care for the next moment
is as foolish as care for the morrow,
or for a day in the next thousand years--
in neither can we do anything.
Only those claims which must be
prepared today are today's duty.
The next moment is nowhere
till God has made it.
George MacDonald

We are told not to worry about tomorrow.
The principle of tomorrow applies
to each moment that has not yet arrived.
God gives our moments according to
the dimension of time.
He holds each one in His hands
until its time is come.
I really want to get this.
He has given me keys for next moments.
One is trust; the other is prayer.
Fear, anxiety, worry, fussing
are not keys; they are thieves.
They rob the present.
The most beautiful thing I can do right now--
if there is nothing else to do--
is trust in the living God.
It makes the common holy
and the present sacred.
It is an expression of my love
for His eternal, moment by moment,

Hope in God O My Soul

Why have you become
troubled within me, O my soul?
Hope in God,
for I will praise Him again
for His help of being near me.
Psalm 42:5
I love that David had everyday days,
days when he struggled with his soul.
And that he always commanded it
to remember truth.
I echo his words today as I speak to mine.
Hope in God, O my soul.
His help is always near
and you need to focus on Him.
Chaos calls to chaos,
to the tune of whitewater rapids.
   Your breaking surf,
your thundering breakers
      crash around me.
Then God promises to love me all day,
sing songs all through the night!
      My life is God's prayer.
Psalm 42:7
I will praise Him as often as I can
for being my greatest hope
and my source of all life.
Hope in God, O my soul.
Though waves crash all around,
God promises His love and His song.
God, thank You for training me
to see You and hope in You
and trust You in the depths.
May my soul sing back to You today.
As deep calls unto deep.
Your presence is my true peace.

Psalm of Life

I said to the Lord, “Keep me, O God,
for I am safe in You. You are my Lord.
Every good thing I have comes from You.
You alone are my inheritance
and my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
You tell me what to do;
even at night my heart teaches me.
Because You are at my right hand,
I will not be moved.
My body also will rest without fear.
You will show me the way of life,
granting me joy in Your presence
and the pleasure of living with You forever."
from Psalm 16
This is a psalm of life--
words I will carry in my heart
and draw on as I walk this day.
I am safe in You Lord.
You guard me and guide me all day long,
so I do not need to be moved.
My body will be at rest and I will not fear.
I want to experience the joy of living with You forever
in the ordinary routine moments of today.
May it be true of me that:
I have set the Lord always before me.
To know Him and to live continually before Him
is my heart's cry.
There is no greater desire.

He Hears Our Sighs

Hear my words, O Lord.
Consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help,
my King and my God.
For I pray to you.
Morning by morning,
You will hear my voice.
Morning by morning I lay
my prayers before You
and look up.
Psalm 5
I love how David expresses
what is real to him and his hope
that God has the power to change all that.
David is full of words, sighs and requests.
When I read, "Consider my sighing," I smiled.
I have often sighed before God and
figured that He was waiting for me
to get over my sighing self and just trust HIm.
But David asks God to please consider--
to pay attention to--his sighing.
God hears me each morning, sighs and all.
He wants me to come as I am
and exchange my sighs for His peace.
David is confident that God will hear him.
He says that he is going to lay his prayers
before God...and look up.
The apostle John assures us:
If we are sure He hears us
when we ask,
we can be sure He will give us
what we ask for.
1John 5:15

God, I look to you and ask You
to hear both my words and my sighs.
I am laying my prayers before You
and I am looking up.
I am confident that You hear me.
And I am confident that You answer.
You are all-knowing,loving and wise.
And though there are deep sighs in my heart,
I trust You
And I look up.
