Go Fish

Do kings tax their own people
or the people they have conquered?
“The people they have conquered,” Peter replied.
“Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free!
However, we don’t want to offend them,
so go down to the lake and throw in a line.
Open the mouth of the first fish you catch,
and you will find a large silver coin.
Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”
Matthew 17:25-26
Jesus was always teaching principle.
Here He was teaching His disciples about freedom.
And authority. And provision. And trust.
Jesus knew that He wasn't obligated to this tax.
But He was interested in more than legality.
He was making a way for the Kingdom.
He was submitting to the system
but demonstrating a higher authority.

Jesus basically said to Peter,
"You do what you are called to do
and I'll work through you to cover all your needs."
The coin in the mouth of the fish was
a supernatural provision for a natural problem.
Jesus never expected Peter to find his own answer.

Every problem contains a supernatural solution.
From unfair taxes to auto repairs,
from broken relationships to daily decisions--
Jesus wants to be my source of provision.
Jesus was demonstrating to Peter
that the system was not his source of provision.
As I walk daily in the areas of my calling,
things will come up that I am unprepared to meet.
I want to trust Jesus for every need.
I am thinking He may want to get pretty specific
if I will trust Him when He speaks.
There are times He will tell me just to trust Him.
But if He tells me I will find a coin in a fish's mouth,
I want to be ready to go fishing.
It's a new season.
