The Reward is Life

Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on
and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate.
For such persons loyally in love with God,
the reward is life and more life.
James 1:13
It is our loyal love for God that makes
sticking with challenges worth it all.
Tests are a part of life.
When we take tests in school,
they are appropriately labeled
and we come into school knowing it is a test.
We get the grade and make
whatever adjustments are needed.
There are times we take a test
and come out feeling really good about it.
We get the grade and discover we actually failed.
That reveals deception.
Other times, we don't feel so good
but get a grade that reflects better understanding
than we thought we had.
That is called humility--and mercy.
Life's tests don't always come in
such clearly labeled packages.
But as we sit with Him and
see the way He sees,
we get perspective.
We see that this particular circumstance
is actually a test, a training moment.
We cry out for grace, mercy and strength.
We go all the way to the end,
no stopping short.
Because really, stopping short
is the only way we fail
if our hearts are loyally in love with God.
His reward is life and more life.
It is life we most need.
His life.
Let us in all the troubles of life remember--
that our one lack is life--
that what we need is more life--
more of the life-making presence in us
making us more, and more largely, alive.
George MacDonald

Lord, You came that we might have abundant life.
Your promise is that when we meet the testings
head-on and persevere til the end,
You bring a reward of life and more life.
I cannot stop short.
Your grace abounds and
Your life is abundant.
I want my life to tell others
that I am loyally in love with You.
