Straining and Training

I press on to lay hold of that
for which also I was laid hold of by Christ.
Forgetting the things behind
and straining toward the things ahead,
I press on toward the goal for the prize
of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus
Phil 3
Each of us has an upward call.
"Before I formed you, I knew you;
I set you apart and I called you." Jeremiah 1
Pastor Norm reminded us last night.
that we were created to fit our call.
Before creation, purpose exists.
This purpose incubates until time calls forth birth,
and then waits for training to come behind us;
Paul says that he strains toward his calling.
There is tension between the posture of rest in Christ
and the strain of call in Christ.
"That’s why I work and struggle so hard,
depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me."

When we work in alignment with our calling,
it is Christ's power that works in us.
We offer our bodies as living sacrifices
that He might work His life through us.
Every day is marked with purpose.
Every day is training day.
Today, Lord, how would You have me train?
What must I do today to work with all Your energy?
As I become more one with You,
this becomes clearer.
I hear Your voice.
I obey what it is You are asking me to do.
Because of Your great love for me.
I so desire for my calling to be one with my life.
Straining and training
with Your grace and strength.
What a privilege.
